STCA celebrates International Diabetes Awareness Day

Earlier this week, STCA marked the International Diabetes Awareness Week with movement, community, and expert advice from Diabetes UK right here in Somers Town.

Last Wednesday, we were proud to mark International Diabetes Awareness Week at the STCA Main Hall as we welcomed Diabetes UK for a special community health and wellbeing session.

It was a morning that felt very relevant and true to STCA’s vision— bringing people together in the community around one of the top health concerns in the area.

Diabetes affects millions of people across the UK, and yet it remains one of those conditions that often goes undiscussed, misunderstood, or undetected.

International Diabetes Awareness Week exists to change that and this year, Somers Town was part of that conversation.

Yoga, then knowledge

The morning kicked off with our weekly yoga session, a favourite among regulars, and a gentle, grounding way to start the day. From 12pm, the space transformed into a friendly drop-in workshop, with Diabetes UK on hand to share practical information on diabetes awareness, healthy living, and prevention.

Whether residents came as someone living with diabetes, supporting a loved one, or simply curious, there was something useful for everyone in the room. The session gave people the space to ask questions, have honest conversations, and leave feeling a little more informed and a little less alone with their health concerns.

Food, community, and good conversation

Healthy food, snacks, and refreshments were served as the workshop wound down — giving everyone a chance to chat and continue the conversations sparked during the session.

These informal moments where connections are made and strengthened are often just as valuable as the information shared.

Thank you

A huge thank you to our partners such as the Diabetes UK and the local GP groups in Somers Town and St. Pancras for bringing their expertise and warmth to our community, and to everyone who came along on the day.

Events like this are a reminder of what community spaces are for — and we look forward to welcoming you to many more.

At STCA, we believe that health information should be accessible to everyone, wherever they live. Events like this one: free, welcoming, and rooted in the community, are exactly how we try to make that a reality.
