About Us

Our Story

When the Monica Shaw Estate was built by the Greater London Council in the 1970s it incorporated a tenants’ hall on Somers Town’s Ossulston Street.

The hall soon became the focus of community activity led by residents and became known as the Hampden Centre; Hampden Street being the former name of Polygon Road, which runs westward from the estate.

Our

History

Our history is a story about inclusiveness and diversity. It’s about community and collaboration. It’s about working for change and growing together. It’s about a shared today, tomorrow and future. All of which are anchored on hard working people who are passionate about going that extra mile.

The organisation in its early years took on a community campaigning role, having overlapping membership with other campaigning local groups, and was at the vanguard of local communities addressing and responding to changing community issues.

The organisation became a limited company in 1985 – Hampden Community Association – and in time secured charitable status too becoming Somers Town Community Association.

Our

Area of Benefit

Our area of benefit has historically been the ward of Somers Town. However following ward boundary changes in 2002 the larger ward of St Pancras and Somers Town was created. Before the arrival of the railways Somers Town comprised the triangular area between Hampstead, Pancras and Euston Roads.

Modern Somers Town is generally regarded as the area bounded by Euston Rd, Eversholt St, Crowndale Rd and Pancras Rd. Our primary beneficiaries are residents within this area, but we also participate in, and host, activities with wider benefit in order to secure wider linkages and opportunities for our local community.

Showcasing

Our Neighbourhood and its Community

Many utilise our services including the Somers Town Job Hub, health and wellbeing programs, Community Cafe, Youth program, and Climate and Sustainability initiatives. Some are affiliated with our centers: Somers Town Community Association at 150 Ossulston and the St Pancras and Somers Town Living Centre at 2 Ossulston Street. However, despite the thousands passing through Somers Town daily, many remain unaware of our presence. We believe our work and story are significant and should be recognised.
