This Tuesday, November 19th, London Clean Air hosted the fourth annual London Eco Champion Awards at the elegant Drake & Morgan in King’s Cross. The event, attended by nearly 200 people, celebrated the tireless efforts of individuals, schools, and community leaders dedicated to building a sustainable future. This year’s ceremony marked a milestone, with expanded participation across London and filming for the upcoming Amazon Prime documentary Groundswell.
Keynote speakers, including Mete Coban MBE, Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, and Zoe Stern from Google, inspired attendees with their vision of a greener London. The awards recognized winners across four categories:
- Mini Warriors (Ages 5-11): Oscar Keane won for championing plastic consumption awareness through The Big Plastic Count.
- Junior Heroes (Ages 12-17): Henry Li and Alessandro Bocos led international fossil fuel divestment efforts.
- Local Leaders (Ages 18+): Gus Alston was celebrated for his solar panel projects and impactful community initiatives.
- Super Schools: Millfield Community School’s Eco Champs impressed with their rooftop gardening and outdoor learning programs.
London Clean Air Co-Founder Georgina McGivern reflected on the event’s growth: “From a Camden initiative to a city-wide movement, these awards are a testament to the power of grassroots climate action.”
As the 2024 awards conclude, the ripple effects of these remarkable initiatives will continue to shape communities. Stay tuned for Groundswell next year, which will amplify the voices of London’s eco-champions on a global scale.
